Description

Awards: Gilbert & Gaillard 2024 Gold

A full- bodied wine with aromas of white pepper, fynbos and spice and a rich palate with firm tannins backed by well-integrated oak. This serious Rhône style Syrah is big in structure and layered with intense black berry fruit flavours and savoury notes.

Pairs well with roast leg of lamb, steak and chops, venison, osso bucco, barbecued spareribs, hamburgers and strong cheeses.

Serve at 16-18 Deg.

Peak drinking time from 2022 – 2027 with a Maturation potential to 2029.

Additional notes:

Strandveld refers to the coastal belt of land which straddles the coastline around Africa’s Southern most tip of Cape Agulhas. This confluence of maritime climate, varying sites and soil types creates the diversity of terroir that distinguishes the wines of Strandveld.

The growing season began positively with a good winter, but spring brought continued cold and rain, particularly in the Cape South Coast. This led to severe Downy Mildew during flowering, threatening the crop due to the wet conditions. The vines were still recovering from last year’s hail damage, resulting in a small yield but intense, concentrated wines. Harvesting was delayed by almost 10 days, with Shiraz picked in mid-March. Due to the challenges, we skipped our usual cold soaking and inoculated whole berries immediately post-destemming to control wild yeast. Fermentation occurred in stainless steel tanks with daily pump overs, and skin contact was shorter than usual at only 10 days before pressing. The wine matured in French oak barrels for 20 months, with 35% being new.
